&go

is the breakfast-cooking device for working adults that provides filling, home-cooked breakfast to-go in a pinch!

Why &go?

1.

Homemade breakfast to-go everyday!

The GoPot makes grits and oatmeal from scratch for you and allows you to take your breakfast on the road, whether you have a rushed morning getting ready or a long commute to work ahead of you.

2.

Variety of cooking options!

Your breakfast isn’t limited to grits or oatmeal. Add a perfect single serving of eggs, bacon, shrimp, or any other breakfast food you love to your meal using the fold-out Griddle.

3.

Temperature transparency!

With the interface of &go, you’ll always know when your Griddle is heating up, cooling down, and ready to cook on.

Where we started…

Electric Breakfast Griddles

Prompted to explore breakfast-related products, we were quickly drawn to electric breakfast griddles for a few reasons:

  • Cooking versatility

  • Compact design

  • Potential for interaction exploration

What if we could reorient the griddle?

Finalized Interface Design

What happens when we add…

a toaster…

an oatmeal cooker…

or any other cooking process…

to make the ultimate grab-and-go experience?

These are some of the questions we asked as we pushed our ideas while seeking the most compelling and interesting interaction!

We finally arrive at our intent:

Our design will be a compact kitchen countertop breakfast-cooking device for working adults who are busy in the morning and want to efficiently cook a filling breakfast with a variety of foods. LED and sound indicators will notify users about temperature and cooking status when users set temperature and cooking modes using tactile dials and buttons.

BIG learning moment!

Several late nights into this phase of the project, we realized we had to take a few steps back due to the amount of work on our plates (we got really excited!). The resulting design, &go, was much more in scope, while still meeting our desired core functions.

Let’s take a closer look…

User Flow & Interface

Users should be able to input:

  1. A cooking time for grits and oatmeal due to varying types of grits and oats.

  2. A cooking temperature for the variety of foods to be cooked on the griddle.

The system will output:

  1. LED indicators

  2. Changing screens on displays

  3. Sound

1.

GoPot and Griddle buttons

Momentary pushbuttons with white LED used to toggle between time and temperature input as well as start or stop cooking processes.

2.

Time/temperature input dial

24-detent incremental rotary encoder used to increase or decrease temperature or time.

3.

Status display

Monochrome OLED display used to display changes in cooking time and cooking temperature.

The flow below maps out all of the inputs and outputs the system and user would share.
